Punjab Government Declares Summer Vacation for All Schools Amid Extreme Heat

In a major relief for students, parents, and teachers, the Punjab Government has officially announced summer vacations for all government, aided, and private schools across the state due to rising temperatures and ongoing heatwave conditions. According to the School Education Department’s notification, all schools in Punjab will remain closed from June 1 to June 30, 2026.
The decision was taken after several parts of Punjab experienced intense summer heat over the past few weeks. Authorities stated that the move is aimed at protecting students from heat-related health risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Rising Temperatures Trigger Government Action
Punjab, like several other North Indian states, has been facing unusually high temperatures this summer. The heatwave conditions have affected daily life in many districts, forcing the government to take precautionary measures.
According to reports, several regions in Punjab recorded extremely hot weather during the last week of May. The Education Department noted that young children are particularly vulnerable to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, making school attendance difficult during peak daytime hours.
The official order was issued by Sonali Giri, Secretary of the School Education Department, and applies to all categories of schools operating across the state.
Students and Parents Welcome the Decision
The announcement has been widely welcomed by students and parents across Punjab. Many families had expressed concerns over children traveling to schools during extreme heat conditions.
With temperatures remaining high throughout the day, parents were increasingly worried about their children’s health and safety. The month-long summer break is expected to provide relief and allow students to stay protected from the harsh weather.
The decision has also brought excitement among school-going children, who will now get additional time to rest, spend time with family, and participate in summer activities before the new academic session resumes.
Schools Expected to Reopen in July
As per the current notification, schools will remain closed until June 30, and classes are expected to resume from July 1, 2026. However, authorities may review the situation depending on weather conditions and issue further instructions if required.
Education officials have advised parents to ensure that children remain hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during afternoon hours, and follow health precautions during the vacation period.
Punjab Continues to Focus on Education Reforms
The announcement comes at a time when Punjab’s education sector is receiving national attention. Recently, Punjab secured the top position in the NITI Aayog School Education Quality Report 2026, surpassing states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi. The achievement has been seen as a major milestone for the state’s education system.
Over the past few years, Punjab has invested heavily in upgrading government schools through smart classrooms, improved infrastructure, digital learning facilities, and teacher training programs. These reforms have significantly improved learning outcomes and educational standards across the state.
