Chandigarh: All government and private schools in Chandigarh are set to reopen on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, after the completion of the summer vacation period. The administration had announced the closure of schools due to the intense heatwave and extremely high temperatures being experienced across the region.
The summer break began on May 23, 2026, and will continue until June 30, 2026, giving students a total of 39 days of vacation. The decision was taken to ensure the safety and well-being of students, as the city witnessed scorching temperatures and heatwave conditions during the peak summer season.
The prolonged vacation has provided students with an opportunity to relax, spend time with their families, and engage in recreational and educational activities away from the classroom. Parents have also welcomed the decision, considering the health risks associated with extreme heat exposure, particularly for young children.
According to the schedule, all schools across Chandigarh, including government-run institutions and private educational establishments, will resume regular academic activities from July 1, 2026. Students are expected to report to their respective schools on the reopening day and continue with the academic session as per the timetable issued by their institutions.
Meanwhile, teachers will be required to return to schools before the students. As per the instructions, teaching and non-teaching staff will report to their respective schools on June 29 and June 30, 2026. During these two days, schools will make necessary preparations for the reopening, including administrative work, classroom arrangements, academic planning, and other essential activities.
School authorities are expected to ensure that all facilities are ready before students return. This includes checking classroom infrastructure, arranging teaching materials, updating attendance records, and preparing lesson plans for the upcoming academic period.
The summer vacation was implemented as a precautionary measure due to the severe weather conditions affecting Chandigarh and nearby areas. Meteorological reports during the vacation period indicated persistently high temperatures, prompting authorities to prioritize student safety.
With the arrival of July and the expected improvement in weather conditions, schools are now preparing to welcome students back to campus. Parents are advised to ensure that their children are ready for the reopening and follow any guidelines issued by their respective schools.
